Mauro Giuliani

“The 120 arpeggios by Giuliani are essential technical studies for any classical guitarist. This particular publication not only includes all of the original studies in a new and logical order, it also contains additional arpeggios by the author, a helpful discussion on performing arpeggio technique, and practice strategies which can be used for any repertoire. This is a great resource for any guitarist who is serious about improving his or her right hand technique.”
-Kevin Gallagher, Professional Guitarist

All 120 Original Studies…

…are included in this book. Not only that, but you’ll get them grouped by difficulty and function.

The first three groups are the fundamentals: three finger arpeggios (p i m etc.), three finger arpeggios with a repeating finger (p i m i etc.), and four finger arpeggios (p i m a etc.).

Levels four through six are divided into two halves. 4a-6a are one finger at a time, and combine arpeggios patterns found in each of the first three groups. 4b-6b involve playing two fingers together, and most are in the form of melody + accompaniment, just like a real piece of music.

Why is this important? With 120+ studies practicing each every day is not possible. Your practice time is valuable, and each of these groups can be practiced in less than a half hour, making it very easy to focus on a group during one technique practice session.

You’ll also get some suggestions on how to organize your practice sessions to get the most out of this book.

New Exercises

Because the first three groups are so fundamental, Giuliani 120+ expands on them. This includes simple things like re-fingering certain studies to use more or different fingers and adding completely new arpeggio patterns.

Because Giuliani wouldn’t have made effective use of the a finger, we have to modify the 120 studies to incorporate this newer technique. If you’re trying to do this on your own it can be difficult. What should you re-finger? What will give you the most bang for your buck? While practicing these studies during my undergraduate coursework, I found several new and interesting fingerings to try out. And they work well. You’ll also get information about the crucial component of arpeggio technique: sympathetic motion. But more on that later.

“While the Giuliani 120 studies are a known standard for developing Right Hand Technique, Christopher Davis has produced an edition of these studies that provide more depth and substance than the standard edition.

“Chris has added a good discussion on how to use these studies on a daily basis. He has also added additional studies that complement the original by adding missing fingerings. All in all I find this edition to be the best one for my use as it provides a more comprehensive edition than the original.”

Sympathetic Motion

Sympathetic motion harnesses the way your hands naturally work. And it’s not a new idea. Aaron Shearer talks about it in his methods, as does Christopher Berg in his great book on technique. While it’s not a new idea, you have probably never heard of it.

Watch any great player and it seems like they do very little work to play quickly and cleanly. This is because they know how to make their hands work for them. And they know that it’s not all about finger independence, but harnessing finger interdependence to work for them. The text and practice suggestions before the studies shows how to make finger interdependence work for you too.

One of the most unique things about Giuliani 120+ is that it shows where to use the m a or a m compound stroke, a single movement that harnesses m and a‘s natural physiological connections. Each study is carefully notated with left and right hand fingerings. In addition, a bracket indicates where you should use a compound stroke. Check out the video to the right for more information.
