Composer Profile: Stuart Weber

Stuart Weber is a classical guitarist and guitar composer living and working in Montana. Not only is Stuart an talented composer, but he’s also a great player and has studied with Christopher Parkening. Stuart Recently sent me a copy of his album The Fifth Row. The premise of The Fifth Row was to record in and explore a variety of old theaters in the Rocky Mountain region. Each track on the CD was recorded in a different theater. The Fifth Row contains arrangements of composers such as Telemann, Weiss and Bartok and original compositions. My personal favorite is Bartok’s Evening at the Villiage in which Stuart has proved himself to be a more than capable arranger. Stuarts own compositions make use of classically oriented forms combined with his unique sense of harmony and line.

Compser Ralf Bauer contacted me last week. Ralf’s Website contains samples of some of his music, all of which is very attractive. Unfortunately I don’t read German, but this is from his Biography page:

Ralf Bauer studied composition, lute, guitar and mathematics.
He gave concerts in China, Pakistan, Italy, Spain, France and Portugal.
His compositions are performed worldwide.
Traditional, folk and experimental elements are part of his music. He composes for solo instruments, duos, trios and chamber ensembles.

His music includes pieces for solo guitar, chamber ensembles and other solo instruments. Give it a Listen!

Composer Profile: Chris Becker

Chris Becker is a composer working and living in New York City. He recently wrote his first piece for classical guitar titled Delta.

Delta was commissioned by guitarist Dan Sumner and the Bloomington Classical Guitar Society and funded in part by a grant from the American Music Center. It was premiered by Dan Sumner on January 10, 2009 in Bloomington, Indiana at the John Waldron Arts Center.

Inspired in part by the natural life of southern Louisiana, Delta consists of three movements and clocks in around 11 minutes. The first is a slow, free introductory movement. The second is more rock influenced in 5/4 and the mysterious final movement makes use of a backdrop of prerecorded crickets and circadas.
