What I’m Playing 1/14/09

In case anyone is interested, I do actually play guitar not just write about it. I have a recital coming up on March 19th, and am busy learning music. My big 19C piece is Elegie by J.K. Mertz – definitely a fun, very showy piece, but I wouldn’t call it a work of extreme musical substance. I’m also playing Bach’s third lute suite because everyone has to play a Bach piece I guess. Leo Brouwer’s Preludios Epigramaticos are helping cover the 20C along with Manuel Ponce’s Sonata Meridional.

I’ll need to add another piece later on this semester, but as of now that piece is undecided. I was thinking something not too enormous by Sor or Giuliani. Any suggestions?

In addition to all that I’m working on Metallica’s One because sometimes you just need some rock and roll.

    Hey again,

Have you heard Maneul Barrueco’s arrangement of Estrellita by Ponce? The first time I heard it, it was played by Martha Masters as an encore at one of her recitals. I’ve played it for years and it’s one of my all-time favorites; I never get sick of it. I know you were looking for a Sor or Giuliani, but maybe another piece by Ponce wouldn’t be so bad for your recital.

In the case of Sor, he wrote some lovely studies, which are presentable in concert. Fantasia opus 7 is a Sor piece I recommend, but you did infer not too large a work, it may be over long this time! But one to consider for the future. I heard Bream play it same programme as Bach it stood up well, I thought.

Regarding Ponce, I prefer Sonata Romantica (homage to Schubert) to Meridional. Take a look sometime and see what you think.
